I can't for the life of me remember what the title was, who sang it, or
really any of the lyrics but it was a song about a train. Possibly an old
train that was once grand but is now in its twilight. I think one of the
lines went: "Good mornin' America how are ya". Can anyone help me pin-point
the song please?

The song you're asking about is called City of New Orleans. It was
written by Steve Goodman. It has been covered by many people including
Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie & Johnny Cash to just name a few. Great
song!

Good morning, American, how are you?
Don't know me? I'm you're native son.
I'm the train they call the *City of New Orleans*,
and I'll be Gone Five hundred miles when the day is done.
