I'm listening to John Conlee and as I'm perusing the liner notes,
etc ... it dawns on me that John seems to be "sparking up a fat boy"
on the back cover. As I flip to the front cover to see what LP it is,
I'm see a "stoned" "red-eyed" John Conlee looking at me, as the sun
sets over his shoulder.

How shocking must this have been to the ultra right wing Country music
audience of 1979 ! Or were they even aware of it ? The picture is a
silouette of him smoking a joint, so I'm wondering if many/any people
were even aware that's what was happeneing ?

Was there any controversy at the time ? I don't remember anything, but
I certainly wasn't following country radio that closely 30 years ago,
either .

Still, even 30 years later, this is pretty shocking stuff for a
Country music LP. Can anyone think of any other Country LPs that
feature marijuana ?

Beer bottles and whiskey glasses have always been a staple of Country
music, but I'm thinking this John Conlee LP might be quite a
rarity . :)

If Willie Nelson couldn't sneak the illegal herb on a cover, (or did
he) how did John Conlee manage to pull it off ? :) LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After I bought my mother a compact-disc player and some CDs, she was
excited to discover she no longer needed to rewind or fast- forward
tapes or move the needle on her record player. Knowing she was not that
technically astute, I called her a few days later to see how she was
managing, "Fine. I listened to Shania Twain this morning" she said. "The
whole CD? I asked.
"No," she replied, "just one side."

You didn't really think it was those rose-colored glasses that made his
eyes look red, did you? :)

The Carpenter (A Parody)

Let us now praise the carpenter and the things that he made
Like the pipes that he carved with the tools of the trade
I can still hear his Zippo lighter flicking many a time
Toking by the hour till the day that he died

Some stems were tough as a crowbar, but he was quick as a chisel
At cleaning them with a plane and packing the bowl level
He was not straight like a chalk line nor right as a rule
He drank Pabst Blue Ribbon and had a pocket full of Kools

He worked his lungs in pot from the cradle to the coffin
With super mega bong hits that you don't see too often
He made bowls out of wood, big bowls, sittin' in his frontyard
Pot fields on the hill and a small patch in the backyard

Some stems were tough as a crowbar, but he was quick as a chisel
At cleaning them with a plane and packing the bowl level
He was not straight like a chalk line nor right as a rule
He drank Pabst Blue Ribbon and had a pocket full of Kools

He said anything worth cutting down a plant for
Is worth doing right because I need to smoke more
If you asked him to sell you some he'd ask if you're a narc
You've got to have the cash son, I'll meet you in the park

Some stems were tough as a crowbar, but he was quick as a chisel
At cleaning them with a plane and packing the bowl level
He was not straight like a chalk line nor right as a rule
He drank Pabst Blue Ribbon and had a pocket full of Kools
