(NOT SO) Great Country (What A Disgrace)

Since the NG has been virtually non-existent, I stopped over at the
(NOT SO) Great Country board to see if anyone's posting there and all
I can say is "WHAT A DISGRACE" !

There's an ongoing thread about George Jones, arguably the greatest
Country Music singer of all time, and NOBODY even has a clue about
what they're talking about. Too funny !

They claim to have 400 + members, but only 5 or 6 people ever post.
Larry Davis never met a keyboard he didn't love, :) and knows about as
much about George Jones as he knows about Grace Jones. ( Here's a hint
mushrooms, that's not a lot)

Homo still thinks he's a political reporter for the Louisiana Light-In-
The Loafers Laughingstock, and judging by his posts he is ! :)

Norm can't decide if he's Hank Williams or Ralph Emery, and informs
everyone every day that he was better than both ! :)

There's a new blind guy, who reads and posts 1000 times a day ! :)
(I'm not making this stuff up)

Busgal's opened up a night school for the spell-checker impaired ! :)

Hilarious.

Some things NEVER change !

Attn Larry Davis - HEY IDGIT BUY A
VOWEL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE NO
CLUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Starday 151 clearly lists who sings
"Window Up Above" and it's NOT George Jones !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not Esker, but the group is at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/greatcountry/

Good folks without the crap because there is a moderator, who some folks
call a censor. Many of 'em used to post here. They have many files of
classic country music you can download.

I'm a member (free) but don't go there often because I don't care for
yahoo's group format and WebTV can't download anything. -- Dick

What would you call it ? It IS a censor. Let's get real, idgit.

This is a classic country NG, as is (NOT SO) Great Country. By
definition we like, listen to, collect , discuss, compare, etc. music
that in most cases is 30, 40, 50, 60 etc years old. Obviously, in
order to like, listen to, collect, discuss, compare music that old, it
stands to reason we have to be by definition, even older than the
music we discuss. Do the math, idgit !

We've automatically already eliminated children, who obviously
constitute 99 44/100% of the problems on the internet, so why in the
world do we need censors ? Don't spend too much time thinking
Einstein, I'll help you here : WE DON'T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By definition, most/all of us to have acquired an appreciation/love of
this older music, must have lived long enough to have done most the
right things, followed most the right rules, seen enough happiness and
tragedy to just appreciate that we're lucky enough to have seen more
of the former than the latter, understand that despite doing most of
the right things we've still been damn lucky and blessed to be smiled
on by fate to be still sucking air, and now thanks to the wonderful
invention of the internet, pn our "golden years" we're able to
converse with people from all over the world in real time, about
anything our little hearts desire, without even any government
intervention, and you want to let a couple of draft dodging brokeback
cowboys tell you what you can and can not post ? Do you want them to
tell you how you have to behave sexually, too ?

Son, you have issues. :)

Thanks for the info, guys. I agree about not submitting to censors, and the
stupid Yahoo! groups format. r.m.c.w. had formed a Yahoo! group a while
back, basically to avoid St*n. Actually nobody censored anything, but we
did keep St*n out. But I think it was the stupid Yahoo! format that made
everybody go back to the newsgroup.

Oh and a lot of the music is older than I am. I missed a lot of it for that
reason, plus radio acting as a censor. Just think of all the music that
could be heard if the same old tired repetition hadn't been repeated
endlessly.

Hi Scott,
Re the difference between group "moderators" and "censors", I'll preface
my remarks by saying that I'm a registered member of the Libertarian
Party. And I fully believe in their platform of minimum intervention
into people's personal choices.

However, that doesn't give a person the right of choice as to whether or
not to stop at a red traffic light.

Likewise, if a like-minded group of people create a "group" to cater to
their common interests (e.g., classic country music) they have a right
to establish ground-rules or a charter for the group, whether it be
written or tacitly agreed upon, which specifies unacceptable behavior
such as O.T. subjects, name-calling, verbal abuse, etc. And they have
every right to ban folks who violate those common-sense rules.

I call that "moderating", not "censoring"!

From my observations, the group's moderator(s) only ban would-be posters
who don't adhere to common courtesy, and whose LOLs and smiley faces are
supposed to make "locker-room" humor acceptable in the group. Keep it in
the locker room or with a bunch of friends. -- Dick

Hi Scott,
Re the difference between group "moderators" and "censors",
I don't believe anyone said anything about moderator except you
because as you've proven for over a decade you are a hypocrite, and
can't admit it. It's a censor. Deal with it.

PUH-LEEZE ! Actions speak louder than words. You can pick up the paper
any day of the week and find some priest or preacher who like yourself
is only too happy to tell you what they BELIEVE in, and then find out
that they "LIVE" their lives in a completely different manner. You
favor censorship, you're no libertarian. Hypocrite.

That's because you're in denial and can't admit the truth. That's
censoring.

And how would you know that ? Who knows what they ban ? Who gets to
determine "common courtesy" ? Hypocrite. For a Libertarian you sure
are sliding down that slippery slope, Bunky. :)

Are you saying "locker room" humor, is not acceptable in the group ?
Is it the "locker room" part ? Just what exactly constitutes locker
room humor ? Is it different from non locker room humor ? Is any humor
acceptable to you ? :) Is any humor acceptable to the group ? :) Who
gets to determine what humor is or is not acceptable ? :) Who makes
the final decision ? :) Is it a vote ? Is it a majority that decides ?
Do the 400 members have a say ?

Let's get real Bunky. You're only a Libertarian if you agree with the
platform. You're an elitist (con) troll freak. :) You have nothing but
contempt for anything popular, because you have nothing but disdain
for the average person. You like Cowboy Copas, because NOBODY else
does. :) LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess nobody else is smart enough
to appreciate your genius! :) LOL !!!!!!!!!

Pathetic.

Apparently the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree. :) Another
genius in the family ? Isn't that what your brother thinks ?

Speaking of small moderated groups ...

The correllation between radio and the con(troll) freaks on these
boards is NOT a coincidence.

If I remember correctly, most of these irregulars were originally on
AOL's radio board that had some kind of a tie-in to the AOL Country
music boards. Seems to me Coop and Elmer Alley :) may have been around
back in those days too, and can maybe clarify. Anyhow, Homo had some
disagreements with DJ Disco Danny Wright from Cleveland I believe,
and threatened to get him fired, and even went so far as to e-mail his
bosses etc... Things quickly accelerated, and AOL shut the board down,
leaving all these DJs with nowhere to go. Long story short,
unfortunately, we inherited a few of them.

Anyhow, I was reminded of this last week, when I dropped by (NOT SO)
Great Country and predictably as I mentioned stumbled upon a George
Jones' thread, that NOBODY had even a clue about. You reminded me
about the DJ connection, because one of their most frequent posters is
another undiscovered legend in his own mind, who like Homo, could have
been the most successful singer/lawyer in the world, but both gave it
up for a career as a minimum wage DJ ! :) Apparently, they're allergic
to success. :)

Anyhow, in one of his posts he went on and boasted that at one time he
KNEW EXACTLY what the people wanted, but alas now that the world has
changed, his crystal ball seems to have clouded up a little, and now
it dawns on me. It's no coincidence that all the most annoying and con
(troll)ing posters on these Country Music boards are all Radio DJs/
programmers, who have spent their lives con(troll) ing what you hear.
Let's not forget Bea Arthur who was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Is it any wonder they want to control what you can post ?

Danny Wright. Now there's a name I haven't heard in a while.
Remember when he got the CMA award for broadcast personality? I
thought the regs would have a cow, Lol. He was mostly on AOL so I
only heard of his reputation but someone did leak his posts.

Too few people are able to appreciate your intellect and humor. They
always seem to want to take things personally. Whether it's out of
jealousy, intimidation, ignorance, or just plain tight-assedness (is
that a word?), they just don't know how to deal with you. I think their
first mistake is thinking they can be more clever in a game of one
upsmanship, then have their egos deflated when they inevitably fail
miserably.

But one man stands head and shoulders above the rest (isn't that right,
Ray A.?), and he is our beloved King Esker!!!!!!!!! :)

Thanks again. I just want to mentiuon that someone I believe you were
championing about 5 years ago Elizabeth Cook has a new CD out. I
listened to a little of her at your insistence years ago, and I
thought she was original but years away and a little crude and said
so. However, as Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys sang so many times
"Time Changes Everything" and it has in her case. Long story short,
she's beginning to come of age ! I liked a LOT of what I heard, and
was especially liking the fact that she wrote a lot of the material. I
won't say I was very impressed until I've had a chance to listen to
the whole CD a few times, but from the little I heard I was
IMPRESSED !

Very few women can write their own Honky Tonk Country songs, but she
can and could be a force to be reckoned with in the future. You gotta
like a woman who Titles her CD "Balls" and sings "Sometimes It Takes
Balls To Be A Woman" .

Remember you heard it here first . :)

<

Well, I can say it now I was very impressed. There's not much not to
like about this CD. Very impressive, especially for a woman. I've made
no secret of the fact that there have been very few female country
singers who seem to "get" the music, which is why very few of them
write their own music. After Loretta Lynn it's a pretty short list. If
they're lucky enough like LeAnn Rimes to get their hands on a good
song, they'll have a hit or two, but then almost without exception
they disappear. Gretchen Wilson blew open some doors a few years back
with "Redneck Woman" and Elizabeth Cook is about to walk through the
same door herself.

It was interesting to me to read a few reviews, and almost without
exception they mentioned Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, and one even
lumped in Tammy Wynette. Let's get real. There are more good songs on
this CD , than probably the last 25 years of Tammy Wynette's career.
If Tammy hadn't married George Jones, I'm not entirely convinced she
wouldn't have been back home cutting hair about a week after the
wedding, Loretta was a pioneer and her early career stuff cemented her
legacy , but honestly, she stopped being relevant when she fell under
Conway Twitty's spell, in the early 70's.

And Dolly ? Please. Don't get me started. That guy who posts his
reviews on this board just posted a couple about some re-issues of old
Dolly Parton LPs, and was falling all over himself drooling about one
of them. Apparently he didn't know you were supposed to listen to LPs,
not hang them up on your bathroom wall. :)

Dolly Parton became a joke, and is probably one of the biggest reasons
Country music has attained stereotype status. There no question she's
talented, but just like her chest, her hits (tits) have been blown way
out of proportion to her musical talent. :) If she was built like her
sister Stella, she's be about as successful. :) To have been able to
sustain a career for the last 30 years as little more than a human
floatation device, is a selling accomplishment that
puts Wal-Mart's selling accomplishments over the same period, to
shame.

Anyhow, I strongly recommend this CD . There's just not much to not
like. Even Rodney Crowell, who's never been one of my favorites
exactly, did a great job producing and the twang just oozes from
everywhere. I have to wonder if he produced his own CDs the same way,
if he wouldn't still be successful.

And I did, but even though they all had their "moments", (chastizing
the fat little baby Cupid was a hoot) this one is just a quantum leap
above what she's released so far. As I think I've shown, I've listened
to a LOT of Country music, and from a Honky Tonk perspective, CDs as
consistenly good as this one from a woman, are few and far between.

One last thing, not really a review, but an observation. Bobby Bare
Jr. is featured on one of the cuts, and it was almost eerie listening
to him sing. There were a couple of times where you'd bet your
youngest child , it was his father singing. Not saying that was good
OR bad, just that it was almost IDENTICAL. You don't need any DNA

That's why I hate most record reviews; they often reflect the bias of
the reviewer, and never fail to mention comparisons to other successful
singers, regardless of the comparative differences. For unbiased,
honest, and informed record reviews - always consult the King! (That
should be included in the newsgroup FAQ). :)

I am in 100 percent agreement with you about Dolly. I absolutely hate
the way she acts and giggles and pretends to be a dumb blonde, although
I don't believe she's dumb at all. She gives true blondes a bad name!
And most of her songs were forgettable, and hopefully regrettable!

exactly, did a great job producing and the twang just oozes from
everywhere. I have to wonder if he produced his own CDs the same way,
if he wouldn't still be successful.
I am placing my order online for "Balls" tonight, so I'll have it in a
few days. Perhaps I'll post my thoughts on it after I've had the
opportunity to listen to it a few times.

In that case, I should be in for a real treat, for I like her earlier
CDs quite a lot!

You don't need any DNA
tests there, for sure. That's Bobby Bare's son !
Well, there's one more reason to look forward to this CD!

That's why I hate most record reviews; they often reflect the bias of
the reviewer,<
Actually I guess the bias is inevitable, I just hate the cronyism. If
you're given a complimentary CD, or complimentary tickets, how do you
think the review is gonna go ? I mean EVERY review is either 3 or 4
stars. The complete lack of negativity has made 99% of ALL reviews
meaningless.

I am in 100 percent agreement with you about Dolly. I absolutely hate
the way she acts and giggles and pretends to be a dumb blonde, although
I don't believe she's dumb at all.<
Not only isn't she dumb, she's actually very shrewd and manipulative.

Actions speak louder than words. They still read here, ask questions
and still e-mail me when I ruffle their feathers. :) They wouldn't
still be checking-up if they weren't impressed. I'm their worst
nightmare, because I'm the real deal. :)

If I wanted to know about collecting 45s, I'd ask one of them. If I
wanted to know about radio DJs and behind the scenes at radio
stations, I'd ask one of them. If I wanted to know about small town
Louisiana and Texas politics I'd ask one of them. But I DON'T ! :)

This NG is about classic Country music, not their versions of science
fiction. I've forgotten more about it than most of them will ever
know. Not bragging, it's a fact. I love it and enjoy it. How many of
them could have answered the thread about "Burning Down The House I
Wuz Brought Up In" off the top of their heads ?

One man's ceiling is another man's floor. :) I don't know if I'm a
blessing or a curse, :) but I enjoy it. Thanks for the kind words.

You are a blessing to all who sincerely seek knowledge of classic
country music, and a curse to those peons who can only WISH they were
the KING! :)
