Songs That Mention All 50 States

Greetings to all my loyal subjects and and any predicates we might
have out there. : )

Last night while listening to Johnny Horton, I heard him mention I
believe Iowa and a few other states that you don't normally hear in a
Country music song, and finally after hearing him do North To Alaska,
I thought it would make a great thread.

Let's see if we can name all 50 states that are mentioned in Country
music songs.

It would probably be impossible if we limited it to song titles, so
any mention in the song of the state will do.

So as not to hog the podium, : ) I'll start with the one I mentioned,
and leave 49 for our collective brainpower, or lack of same.

1 - Alaska - "North To Alaska" - Johnny Horton

dont know if 40 Miles fm Popular Bluff
mentions Missouri or not
BUT Porter & Dolly sang it

Alan Jackson: "Job Description"
I sleep eighty miles an hour
To the whining of a diesel down the interstate
Dreamin' 'bout my little girls
The easy chair that sits beside the fireplace
Then we shut her down in another town
Shower up and do just what we came to do
Sing for the people
Count the money and the miles back home to you

I think we need a checklist of which states are still missing 'cause I
can't remember. Sorry if the following are duplicates.

Hank Snow sang "Duquesne, Pennsylvania"

More Marty Robbins from the album "Gunfighter Ballads":

"Big Iron" mentions an Arizona ranger.

"Running Gun" mentions Kansas City.

And one of the songs is titled "Utah Carol". E.T.

I know there are many songs that mention "Carolina" or "Caroline". But I
can think of only one that mentions "South Carolina" specifically.

That is Cowboy Copas' version of "Filipino Baby" which includes the line
"... then one day he whispered darlin' I've come back from Caroline,
South Caroline ...".

Other singers' versions of "Filipino Baby" leave out the reference to
"South Caroline".

BTW, are there any songs that specifically mention "North Carolina", or
is the "Carolina" of song always assumed to be the North one? -- Dick

If I remember correctly, Waylon Jennings cut a song titled "South

Erase th capital add song
Thanks for the list Zeke. I've made a few adjustments, in that I feel
to waste Jimmie Rodgers on Texas, is probably foolish, when you
consider all the hundreds of obscure artists who have recorded a song
with Texas in the title, so I used him for his rare Hawaii song . I
know we probably could have used Elvis, but I really don't consider
him primarily a Country artist.

We'll probably have to make some more adjustments, when we discover
that whoever we use for one of the more difficult states, has already
been used for a more common one.

I've tried to use to suggestions everybody offered up when I could,
and I think we've got something like 22. I don't want to use up
anymore , and want to allow everyone else to contribute if possible. I
just wanted to transfer everything to Zeke's list, and thought of a
few more while I was doing it.

Remember, only one song by each artist. We want 50 different artists.

Mississippi: "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man," Conway Twitty & Loretta
Lynn.
Someone else mentioned a Charley Pride song, and since we're only
allowed to use a singer once, I thought it would be best not to
eliminate BOTH Conway & Loretta with one song, so I used the Charley
Pride song about Mississippi.

Florida: "You Ain't Just Whistlin' Dixie," Bellamy Brothers (Is this too
recent a song to qualify?)
Not at all. Age has nothing to do with it. They're still releasing
some good classic country even today. However, somebody mentioned a
song they did about Indiana, and I used that because I think Indiana
would be harder to find a mention about than Florida.

I'm ASSUMING you think I wouldn't use Emmylou Harris, and in this
instance you're correct. : )

However, don't assume because I think she's a phoney and a sell-out,
that I don't enjoy SOME of her music.

38 down, 12 to go. I took Merle and ET's recommendations for Wisconsin
and Oregon. I looked up on Billboard for information on Guy Mitchell
and he's never charted "Top 40" on the Country charts, which surprised
me a little because I know I've got some stuff of his on Starday, of
all labels.

If that song is froma Starday session I might consider it, but
honestly I'm leaning toward Hank Snow's "Ducayne Pennsylvania" as soon
as I can come up with someone else for Washington.

Just to keep things moving, I moved Gene Autry To Utah, for the same
song "Sioux City Sue" to make room for Tammy Wynette & David Houston's
mention of Nebraska in "My Elusive Dreams" .

The Ballad Of Sally Rose by Emmylou Harris
(Through the valley of the shadow of Roosevelt's nose
Adios, South Dakota, adios, Sally Rose).<
That'll work for now BUT ... I'll have to hold off until I can confirm
that it was a complete song and not two separate minute and a half
bookends ala Willie's Red Headed Stranger to her concept LP.

Timing is everything and just last night was listening to Johnny
Cash's song that mentioned South Dakota from I believe that Indian one
he did. The General perhaps. I forget the title right now. Mentioned
Wounded Knee, Custer , etc ...

I'll keep it in mind in case we need to do some last minute
adjustments, or Emmylou's song is in pieces. Can't remember
EXACTLY. : )

"You're Not in Kansas Anymore" has been a guilty pleasure of mine for years

loud-drums-and-guitars songs), but I'd never think of it as classic country.
Although, if "Achy Breaky Heart" is...

Your other songs are all about cities, not the state itself. No good, as I
found out when I tried to get Hank Jr.' "A Country Boy Can Survive" in for
New York.

Please. We used to have one of Stonewall's cronies, and who knows
maybe even Stonewall himself whining about such nonsense like you,
UNTIL I personally posted examples of Stonewall's "Nashville Sound"
sell-out days. You guys all have your heads up your butts. You'll
whine forever about Patsy Cline adding some "Nashville Sound"
sweeteners, when guys like Stonewall was every bit as guilty.

Then in your next breath you'll champion a guy like Dale Watson, who's
arguably written and recorded some of the very WORST examples of
songwriting EVER committed to a Country CD, and cite that as an
example of "classic country" because he didn't add any strings .
Please.

As I've said a MILLION times, it still comes down to the song. Patsy
Cline's songs were written by the greatest Country songwriters of all
time, people like Harlan Howard, Willie Nelson , Hank Cochran, etc ...
and have been covered by almost any Country singer you can mention for
close to 50 years. When ANYONE ever covers a Dale Watson song let me
know.

Finally, what I find REALLY amusing, is I find almost all of Dale
Watson's songs almost unlistenable, with the exception of "South Of
Round Rock Texas" , which I think is GREAT. (ATTENTION MR. GEORGE
STRAIT " This could be your 60th # 1 song ! ) What's inconceivable to
me, is how in the world he can have the nerve to put out a Greatest
Hits LP or Best Of : ) and then not even INCLUDE that
song ??????????

I mean if you can't even pick out the good songs AFTER you've recorded
them, what exactly are your chances of writing them, and picking them
out BEFORE you record them ?

Hey, I told you I LIKED the Jo Dee Messina, Phil Vassar and Brooks & Dunn
songs, didn't I? I guess the only changing I've got to do is stop thinking
of them as "guilty pleasures" and start thinking of them as country songs I
like, just like "Nothing Sure Looked Good on You" and "Cajun Moon" and
"Amarillo By Morning" and "Good Ole Boys Like Me," right? And guess what? I
can't stand Dale Watson either, and I like stuff like Eddie Rabbitt's "You
Don't Love Me Anymore" and Crystal Gayle and Gary Morris' "Making Up For
Lost Time" and even Mark McGuinn's "Mrs. Steven Rudy" just as much as those
generally-accepted pure-country tunes mentioned previously. Don't try to put
me in a box. (Not even a pine box, on a train back to Georgia.)

Vassar. : ) Were you under the impression I pay attention to your

Again, almost everyone around here is nothing but a stump, an
unthinking rubber stamp, with the exception of myself of course. : )
You're just about the only other person I've heard say ANYTHING
negative about ANYONE from Texas in the 15 or 20 years I 've been
around here.
John Morthland said it best in his book with a great line about Texas
singer/songwriters, but I can't remember it EXACTLY off the top of my
head, but I WILL reprint it sometime this week . Bottom line, just
because you're from Texas and use a steel guitar doesn't mean your
music doesn't SUCK ! : )

, and I like stuff like Eddie Rabbitt's "You

Doug Stone and Billy Joe Shaver . : )

Seriously, I don't know, Eddie Rabbitt had a few moments of greatness,
but if you're gonna include Crystal Gayle and Gary Morris, or even
Gary Morris solo, I might have to question your right to visit this
site. : )

Maybe we can set up some screeners like they have at the airport, or
better yet maybe a trivia question, and if you don't get it right your
access is denied. If your talking about Gary Morris it means your a
woman, and should probably be voted off the island just on principle
anyway.
You're just proving that woman (with very, very, very, very FEW
exceptions) don't "get" music. It's one of those right brain / left
brain mysteries. Never have , never will.

Maybe Karen Hilly can hook you up with some old Soap Opera re-

Hey Esker, it's your game so you're entitled to make the rules as to
inclusion/exclusion of a song. But I'd like to see a little more
consistency.

Specifically, I want to quibble about your exclusion of a reference to
"Kansas City". You said it mentions a city but not the state itself.
Obviously, the city is named for the state.

However, you DID include the song "Utah Carol" which is about a cowboy
named for a state, not about the state itself.

And you also included "City Of New Orleans" in which the reference to
Illinois ("Illinois Central") is a railroad, not the state itself.

Likewise, although I can't cite any specific examples, I bet that at
least one or more of your included songs contains a reference to "(State
name) River", which refers to a river, not to the state itself.

It's presently a moot point, but similar cases may arise during the
search for the missing states, so we need some clarification of the
rules. -- Dick

Thanks for proving for probably the 1,000,000 th time what a dickhead

Let's see if we can name all 50 states that are mentioned in Country

It would probably be impossible if we limited it to song titles, so
any mention in the song of the state will do

To quote your rule again: "Let's see if we can name all 50 states that
are mentioned in Country music songs."

Isn't the state of Kansas mentioned in the 2-word phrase "Kansas
City"??? Sure looks like it to me! -- Dick

Threw The Rest Away by Tracy Lawerence
(He said some was spent on gambling. A lot was spent on women.
A little on some good Cabernet,
Three or four devorces, at least as many horses,
that never left the startin' gates,
Diamond rings and furs, swampland in New Jersey,
That week I spent a year in L.A. I hate to admit, I threw the rest
away.

Since it actually mentions the state in the title I'm going to replace
Cowboy Copas' " Filipino Baby" with Josh Turner's "South Carolina Low

"South Caroline" anyhow. :)

Old Flames Have New Names by Mark Chestnut

(I left town two years ago and moved on up to Idaho
but swore that I'd be back again to pick up where I left off,)

OR

Old Red by Marty Robbins

(Old Red was one of the orneriest yet I'd seen at the big rodeo
He'd bite you and kick you and stomp out your life,
Old Red had never been rode.

Meaner than sin, wild as the wind that blew on the Montana plains
Old Red was one of the last of his breed and wasn't about to be tamed.

From Idaho, a young cowboy came to ride in the big rodeo
The young cowboy's name was Billy McLean.and Billy had never been thrown.)

Cowboy Copas' " Filipino Baby" with Josh Turner's "South Carolina Low
Ground" . . Secondly, if I remember correctly Copas kind of slangs
"South Caroline" anyhow. :)

South Carolina Low Ground - Josh Turner

Just updating.

44 down and ONLY six more to go !!!!!
It's slowing down a little , so obviously it's getting a little
tougher.

I said we'd probably have to move a few around before we're through,
so it's probably right around that time. : )

I'm gonna remove Johnny Horton from Alaska and use him for New
Hampshire, which will probably be more difficult to find a mention of.
He mentions New Hampshire in "Big Wheels Rollin' " .

That leaves Alaska open, which I'll fill with "Alaska Lil And Texas
Bill" by Hawkshaw Hawkins for now.

Now you can count the remaining states on one hand. ( Well, at least
SOME of us can ! ) LOL !!!!!!!! : )

45 down and only 5 to go !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just updating :<
Didn't intend to come back again so quickly, : ) but I was listening
to Roy Clark's version of "Is Anybody Going To San Antone", and in it
he mentions Fargo, North Dakota !

I think Roy Clark is more representative of Classic Country music than
Neil McCoy, and as someone who's been around for something like 50
years, he's obviously MORE desrving , so I'm gonna use Roy for North
Dakota.

Plus, if any of Ray (Bea) Arthur's "friends" are anything like Bea,
Roy Clark deserves special consideration for treating them the way
they deserve to be treated. : ) LOL !!!!!!!!!!

Why of course Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. : )

Besides, I can smell a trick question a mile away. Everyone knows this

states ! : )

Pssssst ! IDGIT !!!!!!!!!! Spelling B's are for ten year olds. : )
I'll see if I can get you an application for next year's "Spelling
Super Bowl" , and who knows, maybe you'll even get a star for your
forehead , to cover up that third eye ! : )
LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, can't you at least fawn over me a little for knowing the
song off the top of my head ? You do understand , that's why I'm YOUR
King, don't you ? : )

Obviously I'm not from that area of the country, but I have heard of
Duquesne University, which I ASSUME is located there, and obviously I
have heard the song, so I could have dropped everything and spent 15
minutes digging it out, to insure that I spelled it correctly, but as
you can imagine, as King I have more important things to attend to,
and thousands of loyal subjects like yourself who fawn over my every
declaration and proofread for me, in case I make a mistake.

Thanks so much for correcting my spelling, but you have to admit
that's a tough one to spell, so there's no guarantee I won't make the
same mistake again. Carry one . : )

P.S. - When you draw my bath, I'd like that cute little pink duck
tonight instead of the yellow one, in honor of Valentine's day. : )

Geez, you are getting slow on the take, Esker! When I wrote "Don't lean
too far or you'll fall on your ass and suffer further brain damage" you
didn't get the implication that that's where your brain is??? I thought
about clarifying that by suggesting that you get your head out of your
ass before falling, but I thought the implication was obvious! Too
subtle for you, I guess.

If you'd read posts other than your own, you'd see that I suggested
"Duquesne, Pennsylvania" in a post on Jan. 31st. But you're too full of
yourself! E.T.

Florida: "You Ain't Just Whistlin' Dixie," Bellamy Brothers (Is this too
recent a song to qualify?)
if it is, then Buddy Jewel's "Sweet Southern Comfort certainly is...

A misty sunrise in my hometown
Rows of cotton 'bout knee high
Mrs. Baker down the dirt road
Still got clothes out on the line
Irwin Nichols, there with Judsley
Playin' Chequers at the gin
When I dream about the Southland
This is where it all begins

From Carolina down to Georgia
Smell the Jasmine and Magnolia
Sleepy sweet home, Alabama
Roll Tide Roll
Muddy water, Mississippi
Blessed Graceland whispers to me
Carry on, carry on
Sweet southern comfort, carry on

Catchin' catfish on the river
Chasin' fireflies by the creek
Kissin' Gary Williams' sister
On the porch, homecoming week
With rusted cars and weepin' willows
Keepin' watch out in the yard
Just a snapshot of downhome Dixie
Could be anywhere you are

In Carolina or in Georgia
Open arms are waitin' for you
Louisiana, Yellow Rose of
San Antone
Arkansas, Mississippi
Old man river whispers to me:
Carry on, carry on
Sweet southern comfort, carry on

Instrumental break

As I sit here I'm surrounded
By these priceless memories
I don't have to think about it
Theres no place I'd rather be

Than Carolina or in Georgia

Joe Stampley's "Roll On, Big Mama" mentions cities in Nevada and Idaho (Reno
and Coeur D'Alene) but not the states, unfortunately. Hank Jr. mentions New
York City in both "A Country Boy Can Survive" and "If Heaven Ain't a Lot
Like Dixie." Does that count as "New York"?
New York, New York. The City so nice, they named it twice (blech)

Or you could use one of these:

Lake Marie by John Prine
(Many years ago, along the Illinois/Wisconsin border)

or

Cadillac Ranch by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
(Hey little girlie in the blue jeans so tight
Drivin' alone through the Wisconsin night).

Every state has at least one official state song. Some have several but very
few are what would be considered by most people to be country.

C. W. McCall's "I've Trucked All Over This Land" could fill in Idaho,
Kansas, or Oregon. See lyrics below. E.T.

C.W. McCall - I've Trucked All Over This Land
Well, I've walked the line on 89
In the Arizona sun
I've chased the moon and I've caught a star
On U.S. one-oh-one
I've seen the sights from the Northern Lights
To the bend in the Rio Grande
I've took in a lot of this U.S.A.
'Cause I've trucked all over this land
Well, I've changed a tire by the light of a fire
On the rock-bound coast of Maine
I've shoveled snow up in Idaho
Been stuck on the Kansas plains
I've been to the end of the world and back With a wheel and a stick in
my hands
I've passed the test and I've done my best I've trucked all over this
land
[Chorus]
I've trucked all over this land
From Maine to the Rio Grande
I've paid the price of a truckin' life
But I've trucked all over this land
I've heard the wail of a gallopin' gale
On the road to the Florida Keys
I've felt the roar of a thunderstorm
On the Oklahoma seas
I've set my sail on the Oregon Trail
I've camped in a redwood stand
I've loved the best and I've hated the rest
But I've trucked all over this land
[Chorus]
I've trucked all over this land
From Maine to the Rio Grande
I've paid the price of a truckin' life
But I've trucked all over this land
I've said a prayer as I climbed the stairs
On the Rocky Mountain side
I've learned the words and I've sung my song
And I've travelled far and wide
I've fought the fight and I've done all right
For the likes of a wanderin' man
I've paid the price of a truckin' life
But I've trucked all over this land
[Chorus] Well, I've trucked all over this land
From Maine to the Rio Grande
I've paid the price of a truckin' life
But I've trucked all over this land
Yeah I've trucked all over this land
From Maine to the Rio Grande
I've paid the price of a truckin' life
But I've trucked all over this land"

Since your last posted list has nothing for Arizona, how about George
Hamilton IV's "Ten Degrees And Getting Colder" which contains a line
"....It was out in Arizona that I heard a lady listening ...". (How do
you hear somebody listening, or have I mis-understood the lyrics?)

Pennsylvania: "Home for the Holidays" -- Lynn Anderson
I met a man who lives in Tennessee, and he was headin’ for
Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie;
From Pennsylvania folks are travelin’ down to Dixie’s sunny shore;
From Atlantic to Pacific -
Gee, the traffic is terrific!

Oh there's no place like home for the holidays,
'Cause no matter how far away you roam -
If you want to be happy in a million ways,
For the holidays - you can’t beat home, sweet home

While it's true there are millions maybe billions of people more
intelligent than I am in the world, there are very few, if any, more
intelligent about "classic country music" or rather I guess I should
say my small area of expertise of "classic country music" .
Isn't it time for your medication?<
As I've mentioned before, I'm delighted to say that even at my age,
except for "self-medication" : ) I'm still medication free. : )

Speaking of delusional, : ) it's common knowledge that since I believe
May of 2005 I have posted under one name and one name only to this NG,
and of course that is KingCountryI .

For you to continue to insist that ANYONE such as "Gary Coleman" who
takes issue with your MUST be me with another psuedo, is again
obviously DELUSIONAL. : )

Not to mention paranoid.

Again, you might want to think about laying off the pot, Willie. : )

You're probably not intellectually intelligent enough to understand
what I'm going to say, but as your King I still have to try. :)

Hate and anger are emotions, and nobody can "cause" them to "happen"
to you except you yourself. If you are feeling hateful and
discontented, it's simply because you already are hateful and
discontented, and has nothing to do with what somebody writes on a
message board in cyber space. : ) Re-read that about a million times,
and get back to us when it sinks in.

In fact, if you'll give us some of your other screen names and save me
the trouble of looking them up, I'll guarantee you I'll find examples
of your hatred and discontent on every single Group you post to, as
I've done in the past. In fact, your buddy Dan Cutrer ran away like
the bully he is, because I publiclly humiliated him when I posted
examples of things he said about me, that he said about others in
other groups almost verbatim !

Bottom line, you can believe what you want, but the FACTS don't lie,
you do. : )

Here's my reply Einstein, you tell me ? :) LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not to worry, apparently unlike yourself my brains are not located in
that area of my body. : ) <

Apparently Willie Nelson isn't the only one around here who seems to
be having trouble with reality. : )

a delusion is defined as:

A false belief based on incorrect inference about external reality
that is firmly sustained despite what almost everybody else believes
and despite what constitutes incontrovertible and obvious proof or
evidence to the contrary.

As you probably know, pot sometimes affects your perceptions of
reality, leading some people to become delusional . : ) As someone
else mentioned, you might want to think about laying off that bong,
dude. : )
I bet other readers got it right away. Next time I'll spell it out for you in one-syllable words. Better save those flash cards for yourself! LOL

If you can't find an Illinois song, I suggest that you take Johnny Cash
out of Arkansas and put him in Illinois.

"Ride this train ride this train with me to the Mississippi river Delta
land
A wide stretch of rich black earth
That spreads out along the banks of the Mississippi river Startin'
somewhere up around southern Illinois And running right on down to the
Gulf of Mexico "

It shouldn't be hard to find another song and artist for Arkansas. E.T.

You could also use Alabama's "Roll On Eighteen Wheeler"
(Seems the highway patrol has found a jackknifed rig in a snowbank in
Illinois).
Or "John Doe No. 24" by Mary Chapin Carpenter (I was standing on the
sidewalk in 1945 in Jacksonville, Illinois).

Take Care

Walk Through the Bottomland by Lyle Lovett
(A New Jersey lady I knew long ago and she was a lady I say
But she met a cowboy who rode on a rodeo and he stole her heart straight
away.)

OR

I Threw The Rest Away by Tracy Lawerence
(He said some was spent on gambling. A lot was spent on women.
A little on some good Cabernet,
Three or four devorces, at least as many horses,
that never left the startin' gates,
Diamond rings and furs, swampland in New Jersey,
That week I spent a year in L.A. I hate to admit, I threw the rest away.
