Lyrics : P : Porter Wagoner Lyrics :
I Haven't Learned a Thing Lyrics

(lyrics are written by Sonny Throckmorton)

Daddy preached 'The Word' in Texas,
when I was just a very tiny boy...
When a songbook and a bible
to me was just another church-pew toy...
I learned to play the guitar,
on them gospel songs that we always sang....
Oh I must have heard ten-thousand songs,
but Lord I guess I didn't learn a thing.
I was pickin' in a nightclub,
just before I saw my 19th year....
I was playin' a ol' guitar,
and singin' that I loved to drink that beer...
Oh my mom, she tried to tell me,
all the sorrow that drinkin' that stuff would bring....
I must have heard it a thousand times,
but I never learned a thing.....
(chorus)
I haven't learned a thing,
no I haven't learned a thing.....
I'm still lookin' for the answers,
Lord, I guess I haven't learned a thing.....
By the time that I reached 30,
my hands would shake too much to make
the courds......
And if I took to rememberin',
all the songs I sang were just a bunch of words
Now I'm singin' in a little mission
all those ol'-time songs my papa used to sing,
And I'm still lookin' for the answers,
Lord, I guess I didn't learn a thing......
chorus
I'm still lookin' for the answers,
Lord, I guess I haven't learned a thing......

(from "The Essential Porter Wagoner")
(this was a duet with Merle Haggard and you can hear Porter and Merle
actually singing different words to the same lines....... a classic)

Actually, I believe it's Merle who does the singing, and Porter does a
recitation.

Porter is famous for his recitations, and this 1977 collaboration
sounds like a last minute spur-of-the-moment thing. I'd be willing to
bet dollars to dimes that's what happened.

Haggard had just left his first major label (Capitol) and had signed
with MCA, who had Porter among others, on their roster. This meant for
the first time in more than a decade Haggard would be recording
without his long-time producer Ken Nelson. If memory serves, he had
long time pals Fuzzy Owen, Hank Cochran and even Porter Wagoner
helping out on his initial MCA efforts, before Jimmy Bowen I believe
took over.

Anyhow, this sounds like Porter was finishing up his two hour
recording slot, and Merle showed up early for his and just sang some
of the background verses while Porter was reciting them. The
interesting part, is as you mentioned, that one of them deviated from
the lyric sheet, and the result is a little awkward, although in
hindsight, kind of funny.

Seems to me it was "In The Get - Toe" but I've mentioned more than
once how it probably was my least favorite Hag LP, so obviously I
don't listen to it very often.

Again, same time as the duet " I Haven't Learned A Thing" we were
talking about 1977, and obviously Hag and Porter were new label mates
and were hanging out a little bit. He'd just gotten divorced and
started living in Nashville part-time, but his releases weren't
selling up to the levels of his previous Capitol LPs, and he blamed it
on everyone being too familiar with him, now that he was around all
the time. I don't really buy that, BUT ... he moved back home year
round, and his career took off, so he certainly convinced himself that
was the problem. : )
