Sorry to report that he just passed away. Sad day for Country music.
This one really seems to hit home more than most because he was still
out there doing it, and doing it well. Unlike a lot of performers who
kind of stay a little too long, Thompson was the exception. In fact, his
last two CDs were great, and among the best of his entire career, and he
was in his 70's ! Just unbelievable. They were so good you had to just
wonder what would have been if he had continued to record regularly over
the last 20 years.
I really thought he had a chance to make a huge comeback in 1997 with
his duets CD, because it starts off if I remember correctly with a
killer version of "Six Pack To Go" with Vince Gill, who I think was
still pretty "hot" around that time, but I guess the politically
incorrect climate must have squashed what I think would have been a big
hit, and instead they released one of the weaker songs on the CD as a
single, and the CD got lost in the shuffle I guess. You have to wonder
who made the decision to release "You Gotta Sell Them Chickens" as the
first single from that GREAT CD ! Hopefully they were immediately fired
and have been forced to make a living selling washing machines at nudist
colonies, because obviously when it comes to music, they didn't have a
clue. What if ...
Anyhow, it's fitting that his last CD started off with the GREAT "Sting
In This Old Bee" , because clearly there was, and what a tribute to
Hank's legacy, to hear him cut something that GREAT at 75 years old !
Talk about going out on top ! I always say it comes down to the song,
and let me state right now, that someday, somewhere "Sting In This Old
Bee" is going to be a big Country music hit ! (And it might not be as
long as you think ! ) Remember where you heard it first ! :)
Obviously we lost a GREAT one, and anyone who can cut stuff like
"Cowgirl Cutie" and "Sting In This Old Bee" when a lot of folks are in
Rockin' chairs was the real deal, and I'm very sad to hear about his
passing.
I'm not even sure there is a God, but if there is one I hope he rewards
this guy for keeping the flame, giving us untold hours of enjoyment, and
for showing by example that greatness is only attained through love.
Hank loved what he did, and it showed. Hopefully he knew how much he was
loved back in return. If he didn't, I hope he'll find out now some way !
We'll miss ya Hank, but your music will never stop ! THANKS !
