Just found out Saturday that mine has a tumor on his left front leg - bone
cancer. The only "treatment" is to amputate the leg but that only slows
down the cancer and buys him a few months more. I don't think I can put
him
through that.
Youcon Dog Irish was a ball dog. He was a German Sheppard with one
crooked ear. He was named Youcon because the man we got him from said
his girlfriend conned him into taking the dog. He had this unique
talent for parking it where we needed to go from room to room. Of
course when you started to walk over him, you never knew if he was
going to get up or move right under your feet...
It didn't matter what activity needed to be done, it had to wait so we
could throw him a dang tennis ball...
He wouldn't just give it back to you, either, oh no, you had to
practically beg him for it.
I thought I was pulling one over on him a few times by using more than
one ball. He could easily hold 2 in his mouth but when he had 3 it was
easier to get one out! He was such a sight, and a wonderful pain in
the petunias, or which ever flower bed was in the best shade. He dug
holes in our yard to hide stuff (like my gloves ;), but he was such
good company and a part of our family, that we just put up with it.
There are two paw prints in the concrete slab in front of our shed. I
scolded him at the time, but now that he is gone, they are a neat
memorial to my dead best friend. He had a bump in his stomach so we
took him to the vet about 5 years ago. The vet removed a grapefruit
sized tumor. Youcon died the day he was supposed to come home, because
he had a stroke.
I guess the moral of the story is we paid $1600 for Youcon's
operation, but he didn't make it home. Not that money is everything,
but D. Lawrence may want to consider this before deciding whether to
remove his dogs' cancerous leg.
I feel for you guys. When your pet is gone, you can still cherish
those precious moments and memories...

Thanks for sharing your story. We've been going to the same vet for 15
years. Every time there's a decision to be made, I've always asked him,
"What would you do if it were your dog?" And I've always followed his
advice (including two hip surgeries on our other dog). Without reservation,
he said he wouldn't do it. So we're going to make him as comfortable as we
can until that miserable day he looks at us with those big, brown eyes and
tells us that he's had enough. We're fortunate that we still have one other
dog, although we're worried about how she will react without her brother.
The two of them are like Mutt & Jeff.
