Are you sure ? Seems to me some of the other voices in your head my be
crossong over onto your radio's frequency. :) I don't remember Hank
Snow ever singin' it, but he might have. He was a far too anal stick-
in-the-mud control freak to ever be loose enough to sing something
like that. I'd probably still be laughing if I EVER heard Hank Snow
sing that one ! Kind of reminds me of Ricky Skaggs singing " So Round
So Firm So Fully Packed" . The image of Mr "Squeaky Clean" singing it,
just makes me laugh every time.
Who's your fav artist that does it<
Oh hell I don't remember but again it's a great song so it'd be pretty
hard to cut a bad version.
OHHHH i listened to Possum

Believe me, I'm well aware of the lyrics ! :) I hate to admit that the
older I get and the less frequently I see my kids, I'm not sure that
song is too far from the truth ! :)

In a similar vein, the older I get the more "Old Dogs Children And
Watermelon Wine" seems to be the most truthful song ever written. :)
Even though he probably could have included another verse about that
jacket ! :) LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm having second thoughts though!! After listening to it some more,
I'm thinking it's Webb Pierce! Webb did record it, as well as a lot of
other people including some already mentioned plus Merle Haggard and Connie
Francis. I'm a little hard of hearing as well but, unlike Zeke, I have no
hearing aids! :-)
Pretty sure it's not Connie though!!!!!! LOL

Sorry, no offense but I don't click on hyper links unless I know the
person who sent them.

Secondly, I just checked out Webb's LPs and I can't find any recording
of it. Until I see proof that Webb Pierce recorded it, I believe what
you have is somebody else, maybe even Lefty Frizzell.

Years ago when I used to download stuff , I can't begin to tell you
how many times the singers were misidentified, ESPECIALLY older
Country songs like this. If two of our regular posters to a Classic
Country group can't tell the difference between Lefty Frizzell and and
Webb Pierce, how many people in the entire world can ?

Reason # 7,451,982 why I am so valuable and God's gift to the NG. :)

I used to call Dan Cutrer the "Minister Of Misinformation", so I'll
have to come up with something new for you two ! :)

but he liked to sing songs Mel Tillis wrote<
Not only that, he loved to STEAL songs Mel Tillis wrote ! :) Webb
helped himself to co-writes on most of Mel's stuff in return for
recording it.

That list(s) you provided just illustrates the importance of the song.
I see it's taken from Webb's LPs, and it reminds me why those LPs were
so GREAT . Besides a couple of singles and a couple of new songs, the
rest of most of the LPs were made up of covers of other artist's hits.
Those 50's - 60's LPs were incredible, in some instances. Those Decca
and Columbia LPs were what made the Country LP/CD market, and actually
point out why it's declining today.

The Dale Watson/Dwight Yoakam Syndrome is what fueled Napster, not the
other way around. Who ever told these guys they could write songs ? I
mean even their mothers wouldn't ever want to listen to 12 original
compositions by either one of those guys, and then we're expected to
have to pay for it, too ? I mean are they really THAT arrogant, to
believe that they're so prolific they can continue to churn out 10-12
of ONLY their own compositions per release, when they've never had a
hit in their lives ? At what point in the story does reality start to
set in ?

Contrast that to most of these Webb LPs, where he basically surrounds
his latest singles with a bunch of "standards", that is the biggest
hits in Country music history. I mean which would you rather listen
to ?

I mean the customer is ALWAYS right, and at some point in time you
have to understand that. If you're just going to record songs for your
own personal satisfaction, why release it to the public ?

Finally, even Sara Evans who's been in the news this week was smart/
lucky enough to include covers of standards by Buck Owens, Patsy Cline
and Bill Anderson on her first CD, which I believe is what created the
"buzz" about her, and enabled her to get noticed . I don't like much
of what she's released since, as admittedly she's headed in a more pop
direction, but it always comes down to the song, and that early CD is
STILL and always will be a pretty good listen.

LOL !!!!! Close enough ! :) But as you can see after scrolling down
your lists and my own personal ones, they eyes and I guess our
memories start to cross a little ! I usually forget what I'm looking
for somewhere in the middle of the list !

Anyhow thanks for the effort . But again, If You've Got The Money" is
a great song and would sound great IF anyone else recorded it. Just to
emphasize the importance of the song, Mel Tillis who we just mentioned
after struggling with Columbia in the late 50's , finally started to
chart with RIC and Kapp around 1965. It's NO coincidence, that even
though Webb Pierce was I believe the most successful charting artist
of the previous decade, he basically never had another "hit" after Mel
left and started with Kapp.

When Mel left, Max Powell became the new "songwriter" and even though
they did break into the Top 10 one more time, Powell wasn't Mel
Tillis, and Webb was all done.

Years ago when I used to download stuff , I can't begin to tell you how
many times the singers were misidentified, ESPECIALLY older Country
songs like this. If two of our regular posters to a Classic Country
group can't tell the difference between Lefty Frizzell and and Webb
Pierce, how many people in the entire world can ?

After the Napster lawsuit people started
mis identfieing singers of songs
intentionally in Their Files (think about it)

Reason # 7,451,982 why I am so valuable and God's gift to the NG. :)

thought that nr shud be higher

I used to call Dan Cutrer the "Minister Of Misinformation", so I'll have
to come up with something new for you two ! :)

I've bn called bout everything---rarely can
deney it---maybe resent it

Yeah it's probably so, but in order to use those services you have to
make your songs available to everyone else too . Sounds pretty
hypocritical to be downloading somebody else's songs, while trying to
screw around with the ones you're providing. Then again I've been
around this board long enough :) and I've heard all the excuses the
holier-than-thou provide for why it's O.K. for THEM to download,
because such and such, etc ... but naturally EVERONE ELSE is a
criminal. :)

LOL ! In my very best Elvis impersonantion ... Ah, thank you vrrrrrrry
much ! .
Then again, if I put the true number of reasons I'd spend all day
typing out the number ALONE and wouldn't have time to post ! :)

LOL !!!! The good news is, as we get older we can't hear what THEY
call us anymore ! :)
Now if we can only figure out a way to NOT hear what they TYPE about
us !

Believe me, I'm well aware of the lyrics ! :) I hate to admit that the
older I get and the less frequently I see my kids, I'm not sure that
song is too far from the truth ! :)
Well, after all these years, we finally agree on something. You
refreshed my memory on two records I got for my daughter when she was
a little girl.
Bobby Bare's "Singing in the Kitchen" and "Daddy What If." They were
corny but a four year old daughter liked them so naturally daddy got
them.
And then there was "Sneaky Snake." I ought to dig that album out for
the grandkids.

Speaking of which, I thought of you the other day while listening to
Lefty. Seems to me you've mentioned a few times that one of your
favorites is "Mom And Dad's Waltz" . I was listening to an interview
on a transcription and Lefty mentioned that all the royalties from the
song had been set up to go directly to his mother and father, with
nothing for himself, so it really was quite a tribute to his parents.

Speaking of Lefty, a lot of people have had "hits" with "Release Me",
and hundreds more have probably "covered it" , but I've never heard
ANYONE come even close to his version. He doesn't get any credit for
it, and everyone always mentions all his other songs, but I don't
think you'll EVER hear a better version. When you think of all the
people who've "covered it" that's saying a LOT !

Finally, just to add a little fuel to the fire of all the Texas wanna-
be's who don't want any sweeteners and strings added, Lefty re-
recorded "If You've Got The Money" and 5 or 6 others when stereo was
invented, complete with a vocal chorus. I would contend that those
recordings are the "definitive" versions of his great songs, not the
originals.

I can't even begin to describe how "GREAT" they are.

Oh yeah! I still can't listen to it without a tear forming. Mom's been
gone for 15 years and dad for 41. Not a day goes by that they don't
enter my thoughts at least once.
And now the kids are grown and moved away. Sometimes you wished you
could hear them one more time singing in the kitchen, banging on the
pots and pans.
I did download "Sneaky Snake" and emailed the mp3 to the kids to see
if their kids would want to hear it over and over. And over.

LOL ! A lot of similarities as we've mentioned, with one exception.
Although it will be 41years NEXT year since my father passed away,
the next time a thought of him brings a tear to MY eye, will be the
first ! :) LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was a great guy in his own way, proud and pricipled, unfortunately
the life of an uneducated immigrant coming to this Country during the
Great Depression was as you can imagine very difficult, and so
naturally was he. :)

Old Man No One Loved
George Jones

In a barroom, down in Georgia, sits an old man.
His whiskers grey and two or three days old.
You can tell he's dreaming up another story.
Just in case there's one he hasn't told.

There's a story that he tells about a woman.
He always says she was a beauty queen
but, he says, the angels came for her one morning.
After that, he just gave up on everything.

Chorus:
"Old Man No One Loves" is what they call him.
The tales he tells are taller than the sky.
"The Old Man No One Loves" sure tells some big ones
and everybody laughs and says, "You know that old man lies".

There's the one he always tells about his children.
His son's a doctor up in Ohio.
His daughter owns a bank in California
but he don't ever see them anymore.

*Repeat Chorus*

But, you know, that old man that no one loves, he died this morning.
The whole town was shocked by all those big long limousines
and all his children gathered 'round and they wept beside him
and one cried out, "My Daddies gone to join his beauty queen".

*Repeat Chorus 2X*
