ain't no trees in Texas, it would be a terrible place to try and

Oh, there are trees down here. South Texas and East Texas have plenty.
And,
the drought has lifted around the area I live in. Not such a terrible
place. I've lived here all my life.

There's gotta be trees in Texas 'cause "Texas Troubador" Ernest Tubb
said so in his song!

"There's a little bit of everything in Texas, just look around and you
will see, ...."

Blue, you didn't look close enough. :-) --Dick

Yeah, I know it's a big state (half the size of Alaska), and you
are
right Zeke about the basic, I took it at Hood, beside Killeen, lots o'
scrub bushes, and Hicks, I realize it's a big state, I only saw a
little
part of it, ol' Vaughn from Blum told me East Texas had plenty o'
trees, and Dick, your right, also, back then (1966), I just figured
the
whole state was like that. Life goes on.

San Antonio! I get to get down that way someday. I'm guessing it looks
similar to the Hill Country around Austin? And, of course I hear lots
about the River Walk. :)

San Antonio! I get to get down that way someday. I'm guessing it looks
similar to the Hill Country around Austin? And, of course I hear lots
about the River Walk. :)
Darrell McCall sang (and maybe wrote) "There's Still A Lot Of Love in
San Antone". Bob Wills sang "Across the Alley from the Alamo" (I guess
he was referring to what is now S. Alamo street (3 lanes in each
direction, hardly an 'alley' or maybe the writer was thinking of the
Gunther Hotel.

Lots of songs about San Antonio, from the old artists to the relatively
newcomers (Robert Earl Keen, JR, Lyle Lovette, Pat Green, etc...)

Geographically speaking, San Antonio 'proper' sits in a 'bowl'. The
ground elevation at the center, downtown (where the Tower of the
Americas is, built for the World's Fair "Hemisfair" in 1968) is 450'.
The outlying edges of the 'rim' of the bowl are typically around
800~900'. Towards the North and West parts of town is where the
southeast edge of the Hill country lies. Bandera, TX is a mere
45min~1hr drive from downtown San Antonio, and the elevation increase is
some 1,500ft.

Coming from Abilene, find Highway 87, through San Angelo, then to
Fredericksburg, then down Highway 16 to/through Kerrville, to Bandera,
to San Antonio. It's a little longer, but certainly a scenic drive and
well worth the time and effort.

A good friend of mine has a little house on about thirty acres just a couple
of miles from Bandera. He's a pretty good country music picker, too. He
and I have done lots of gigs together. He's retired now and bought the
land out at Bandera and is really enjoying retirement. I still play music
nearly every day (country!) and have a recording studio where I record the
"local" talent in the area around Abilene. I visit San Angelo often, its
not that far from where I live, I've just never ventured on a little further
south to San Antonio. I record lots of the "new" Texas Country music, but
I'm still a bigger fan of classic country. I've lurked in this group for
many years, but I think the other day was the first time I posted.

I've been around here sine before Dan formed his group on Yahoo.
There's been different names for me, though ;-)

How well acquainted are you with Tracy Pitcox, over at Heart of Texas
Music in Brady (or is it Mason or Menard?)?

I was in the Medina Lake area not long ago, asking about Richard Wolfe.
Richard picked and sang on Bobby Flores' "Just For The Record" Cd.
(for those that don't know, Bobby Flores was/is Ray Price's fiddle player)

I found out that Richard split up from his wife (again), has moved out
to Florida and is dying of Cancer. I think Richard is... 45? He and
his band opened for Darrell McCall (among others) and have played with
all the big names.

Don't know what they called themselves, but it was Richard Wolfe,
guitar, vocal; Randy Reinhardt, steel/keys and Gerald Connell (OX) on bass.

Grab Bobby Flores' "Just for the Record" and listen to "Bubbles In My
Beer" to hear those guys.

Nope, no trees around the Lackland/Kelly AFB area... but it doesn't take
-much- travel to get to South and East Texas where the San Jacinto
National Forest resides, and it's 100'+ tall pine trees.

Ash trees around here have been known to grow to 60'.

Of course, Tyler, TX is the Rose Capital... probably the inspiration of
Darrell McCalls "Eleven Roses" (a #1 hit for Hank, Jr, way back when)
