scrub bushes, and Hicks, I realize it's a big state, I only saw a
little part of it, ol' Vaughn from Blum told me East Texas had plenty o'
trees, and Dick, your right, also, back then (1966)
I was there from 1962 to 1965.
I've been here since 1958.
I've been here since 1955. :) I'm out just west of Abilene, where
are you?
Down here where Lackland and Kelly USA (ex Kelly AFB) are.
where AF Basic Training is -still- held, for all of the AF.

Post by Mark HicksSan Antonio! I get to get down that way someday. I'm guessing it looks
similar to the Hill Country around Austin? And, of course I hear lots
about the River Walk. :)
Darrell McCall sang (and maybe wrote) "There's Still A Lot Of Love in San
Antone". Bob Wills sang "Across the Alley from the Alamo" (I guess he was
referring to what is now S. Alamo street (3 lanes in each direction,
hardly an 'alley' or maybe the writer was thinking of the Gunther Hotel.
Lots of songs about San Antonio, from the old artists to the relatively
newcomers (Robert Earl Keen, JR, Lyle Lovette, Pat Green, etc...)
Geographically speaking, San Antonio 'proper' sits in a 'bowl'. The
ground elevation at the center, downtown (where the Tower of the Americas
is, built for the World's Fair "Hemisfair" in 1968) is 450'. The outlying
edges of the 'rim' of the bowl are typically around 800~900'. Towards the
North and West parts of town is where the southeast edge of the Hill
country lies. Bandera, TX is a mere 45min~1hr drive from downtown San
Antonio, and the elevation increase is some 1,500ft.
Coming from Abilene, find Highway 87, through San Angelo, then to
Fredericksburg, then down Highway 16 to/through Kerrville, to Bandera, to
San Antonio. It's a little longer, but certainly a scenic drive and well
worth the time and effort.
of miles from Bandera. He's a pretty good country music picker, too. He
and I have done lots of gigs together. He's retired now and bought the
land out at Bandera and is really enjoying retirement. I still play music
"local" talent in the area around Abilene. I visit San Angelo often, its
south to San Antonio. I record lots of the "new" Texas Country music, but
I'm still a bigger fan of classic country. I've lurked in this group for
many years, but I think the other day was the first time I posted.
