Is there a place for her in today's Country music ? Does this mean her
career has stalled in the Pop market ? Just wondering since obviously
I don't follow pop music .

Hell yeah, as one person replied to the website, she is not only a
beautiful,smart,women, she's talented. Aren't these the requirements
to sing COUNTRY music? Or are these qualifications of the same type
many TV ads for people running for the PA Superior Court cite in the
ads. One woman would be a good judge because her father worked in a
steel mill in Aliquipa, and she's a mother. A man running for judge
points out that he's a father while he's rubbing his dog's stomach.
Yep, these are people that should be on the Superior Court.

Actually, I'm not sure. :) I think because of this video age we live
in ALL Country music women have to be beautiful and talented by
definition, so that leaves smart . I can't think of too many Country
music women that would EVER fit that category, especially the
fans. :)

A while back everyone used to mention the "dumbing down" of country
music, and it's definitely true. One only has to look at the huge
sales figures of lightweights like Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Faith
Hill and Kenny Chesney, for proof. (That's also probably the only time
Garth Brooks and light weight have appeared in the same
sentence ! ) : )

Jewel brings some substance to the genre, but I don't think that's
what's selling right now. The critics all love her, but until I hear
something of hers I'm not convinced. The critics also love Bonnie
Raitt, but Bonnie will probably be the first one to tell you she sold
out thirty years ago ! : )

Critics are mostly just rubber stamps and paid whores, which is why
the internet and sites like this are so valuable. And I haven't even
mentioned yours truly ! : )

But we get what we deserve. The world as we know it changed forever
when the importance of video was proven during the John F. Kennedy -
Richard Nixon debates in 1960. It might not "work for you", but those
ads have proven over time to work, which is why they run them .

We live in a superficial time, and obviously our music reflects it. U-
Tube is the rage, not U-Speaker . :)

What percentage of women do you think will vote for Hillary Clinton in
November ?

Bottom line, I admit to knowing next to nothing about Jewel, but if
she's got any substance or soul, specifically what I would call
"blues", she's about 40 years too late. :)

Then again it has been about 25 - 30 years since the last revival.
Maybe we're due. : )

Driving home from church one Sunday, the father tuned the radio to a
country and western station.
"How can you stand that stuff?" complained his 16-year-old son. "It's
all about lonesome cowboys, gunfights and broken hearts." Knowing he
preferred rock 'n' roll, the dad asked, "Well, what's your music about?"
"That's the beauty of it," the son said. "You just don't know!"

If only a REAL 16 year old could be that intelligent. :)

I mean, let's be honest, we've ALL been 16 years old and listened to
what we thought was good music, only to go back 20. 30, 40, 50 years
later and just cringe with embarassment. Most everything people listen
to during their high school/college days is just whatever's popular
and has as much with belonging, fitting in, and being "hip" than
anything else. The reason us classic Country music fans are so
important, and should be worshipped and listened to, :) is because by
definition we've shown that we don't want to belong, fit in, OR be hip
and have the strength of character to walk our own crooked little
paths, :) where no human has ever ventured, armed only with our trusty
walkman, our shotgun, and our faithful dog by our side, with our
middle finger stuck proudly in the air ! :)

Every November I get that election fever ! :)

Coop
NO. Which is why I asked. :)

Secondly, ANYBODY who's mentioned musically in the same sentence as
Trisha Yearwood, is admitting to being on the musical Titanic. :)
Year - wide is identical to one of your other "favorites", Suzy
Bogguss. They both have great voices, with absolutely nothing to
say. :) They might as well just get a phone book and sing all the
telephone numbers and street addresses to music. This isn't the London
Symphony, it's Country music.

But thanks to your snotty response, I did a little research myself and
CONFIRMED what I believed to be true, Jewel's getting older, her sales
have dried up, and she's obviously getting shall we say desperate ? :)
LOL !!!!!!!

She cut her debut album, Pieces of You, when she was nineteen and it was released in 1995
The album was a huge success and eventually sold over 12 million
copies in the U.S. alone, more than all of her subsequent albums put
together.<

Not a good sign, when you understand that was MORE than 12 years
ago ! :)
Post by Coop
In 2003 Jewel released her album 0304. She writes in her liner notes, "I wanted to make a record that was a modern interpretation of big band music. A record that was lyric driven, like Cole Porter, that also had a lot of swing<
Not a good sign again . The girl sounds like she's just throwing paint
at the wall hoping for something that will stick. Anything. Can a jazz
or classical CD be far behind ? Like Suzy Bogguss and her ilk, she
sounds like another self-important Diva ! :) LOL !!!!

However, a number of Jewel's fans criticized her for abandoning her traditional folk style in exchange for a new pop sound. Accusations of "selling out" for personal gain, among other things, were made<
BINGO !!!!!!!! Where did I just hear that ? :)

Seriously, the article earlier said something about the Red Hot Chili
Peppers having something to do with "discovering" her, and obviously
were the reason her first CD sold anything.
Post by Coop
Jewel confirmed that she is no longer affiliated with a record label, confirming rumors that Atlantic Records failed to renew her contract after the lackluster sales of her latest album<
BINGO !!!!!!!!!! :) Again, just confirms what I suspected and why I
asked.

Birds of a feather. If you're signed by a label that also just signed
Yearwood, they don't understand Country music and the result will
probably be just as predictable. Elevator music for discriminating
tastes ? :) LOL !!!

That's what I implied. Now watch her have a hit single and prove
everybody wrong, lol.
