I was just listening to this song sung by Jerry Lee Lewis, I believe
from around 1969, and again I was reminded what a GREAT song it is .
If memory serves, I believe it was written by the semi-legendary Leon
Payne, and a quick Google shows that people like , George Jones,
Ronnie Milsap, Wilma Burgess, Roy Drusky, Glen Campbell, and my
favorite version by Merle Haggard and even Dean Martin among others ,
have all recorded it besides Jerry Lee.
Anyhow, out of curiosity I decided to check it's chart history,
believing that it had been around a long time with multiple hits for
different people, and I was pretty surprised to see that while it had
been a hit twice, for both Con Hunley and George Jones, Hunley's
versipon in 1979 was the first time it made the Billboard "Top 40" .
Quite simply, that seem unbelievable to me, as I said having been
familiar with Haggard's version and Jerry Lee's, both 10 - 15 YEARS
before Hunley hit the charts with it.
Anyhow, my question to all you Billboard /singles/chart enthusiasts
is, "How many times did it hit the Country charts and not "break" the
"Top 40", before 1979, and (2) did someone like the previously
mentioned Dean Martin have a big hit with it in another field of
music, which may have caused the Country singers to NOT release it as
a single ?
Just curious. GREAT song .
Thanks in advance .
