THIS DAY IN COUNTRY MUSIC
"The Year That Clayton Delaney Died" hits No.1 for Tom T. Hall
On this day in 1971, Tom T. Hall’s “The Year That
Clayton Delaney Died” hit No.1. As Hall explained to Dorothy
Horstman, the song was about a real person, though Clayton Delaney was a
fictitious name. The real-life Clayton Delaney had been a country
musician from Eastern Kentucky whose way of reinventing the classics
when he performed them inspired Hall. “Everybody else
I’d hear play guitar and sing wanted to do it as close to the
record as they could get,” Hall said, “but Clayton
wanted to do it the way Clayton did it.”

I'm familiar with the story about the coat, but I have nothing but good
things to say about Tom T. Hall.

When I was in my early teens, in the early 70's; I was a huge Tom T.
fan. Still am. My folks took me to several of his shows, and he was
always super nice to me. I got to go on his tour bus on a couple of
occasions, and he even gave me a plaque that he'd been awarded for
public service. He would go out of his way to thank my parents for
bringing me to the show, and would even send me a Christmas card each
year.

I hate that he's retired from the music business, as we need more folks
with his talent to make real country music.

Stay safe,

I'm a fan of his too--never met him

But he might as well retire
As Alan Jackson said
they probally wouldnt let Hank Williams
play the Opry today

Alan's finest hour was when he sang the
Possums song on that awards show
when they wouldnt let the Possum
have 3 minutes--JMO
