Hitchhiking?

Since that O.T. subject came up in the "nothing" thread, what songs
touch on the subject of hitchhiking?

For one, there's Johnnie Rodriguez' "Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico".

And there are at least a couple about hitchhikers who get picked by
ghostly drivers, but I can't recall the titles or singers offhand, but
one's about a trucker who crashed his rig to save a bus full of kids.
Anybody know the titles and singers? -- Dick

Phantom 309 - Red Sovine

He also had "Bringing Mary Home" I believe.

There's also a couple of pretty good ones off the top of my head :

The Ride - David Allan Coe
Riding With Private Malone - David Ball

"The Hitchhiker" (obviously), by Tom T. Hall, and "Me and Bobby McGee",
by Kris K.

Yeah, the above are all good answers to my question! But I'm not
familiar with Tom T's song, guess I'll google for the lyrics.

There's also Lee Kernaghan's song "Rules Of The Road" in which I dunno
whether the driver who picks him up and gives advice is a living legend
or a dead legend. Don't know much about Aussie singers except Slim Dusty
seems to be their equivalent of Hank Williams. -- Dick

A few thoughts from off the top of my head: "Me and Bobby McGee," for
sure. Saw an interview show with Kristofferson that says it was
inspired in part by a Fellini movie. "Is Anybody Goin' to San
Antone," a Charley Pride song, also comes to mind. "Smoky Mountain
Rain" and "Cold Kentucky Rain," which work pretty similar emotional
territory -- big hits when covered by Ronnie Milsap and Elvis,
respectively.

Pushin' it for C&W: Hitchhiking figures into "Coyote," one of those
almost voyeuristically personal things by Joni Mitchell, which makes
me think of another song about emotionally (and by that time
germicidally) risky behavior, Heart's "All I Wanna Do (Is Make Love
To You). Emmylou Harris's "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" doesn't
mention hitchhiking but according to some liner notes was inspired by
the Tom Robbins nove of the same title. "NYC" by Steve Earle, who in
some moods is as country as lead poisoning from radiator moonshine
though this song is a collaboration with The Supersuckers; also
"Christmastime in Washington" ( the reference is more about *not*
hitchhiking and the song is about politics, but how often do you get
allusions to Woody Guthrie and The Doors in the same lyrics?).
"Skinwalker" by Robbie Robertson may or may not involve being given a
ride, which may or may not have ended well.

No spectral apparitions of heroic truck drivers or Hank Sr. were
harmed in the making of this followup.

Apparently the swallows are returning to Capistrano. :) So sad about
(Not So) Great Country, eh ? :) LOL !!!!!!!
"Me and Bobby McGee," for sure. Saw an interview show with Kristofferson that says it was

Pssst ! (Not So) Great Country is gone. We watch 20 minute Three
Stooges episodes , not Fellini. Get over yourself. :)

Joni who ? :) Again, get over yourself. Try too much pot.com or old
hippie.com. :)

See ABOVE ! :) LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are
you having a flashback ?
"NYC" by Steve Earle, who in some moods is as country as lead poisoning from radiator moonshine<
Only to old hippies who don't understand the genre. Steve Earle is
about as Country as a Fellini movie. :)

Hopefully never .:) You're not "hip" at 60 years old, you're "out of
it" . Did you read today's report about the newly discovered harmful
effects of marijuana ? It's NOT news to a lot of us. :)
"Skinwalker" by Robbie Robertson may or may not involve being given a ride, which may or may not have ended well.<
Again, try Bob Dylan.com . :) I hear if you play it backwards, he gets
back with Joan Baez ! LOL !!!!!!!!!

Seriously dude, this is a classic country NG. :)
No spectral apparitions of heroic truck drivers or Hank Sr. were harmed in the making of this followup.
Just our sensibilities ! :)

Why, happy Jerry Garcia's Birthday to you too! Back to the original
topic: Ricky Skaggs, "Highway 40 Blues," also comes to mind ("the
money's gone, stick out my thumb...").

Cheers,
